James Geikie

Teacher, 5th Grade

Growing up in the small town of Athol, Massachusetts, James took an early liking to music, first setting his mind on becoming a guitarist at the age of 8. Having a father, uncle, and childhood best friend who played the instrument as well, there was never a shortage of music surrounding him.

In his teen years, he would play a strong role in high school band, both on and off the stage. Excelling at playing guitar, bass and percussion, he often performed in football half-time shows, spring and winter concerts, and in parades with the marching band. Although focusing primarily on the guitar, and being self-taught, James made it a priority to hone his vocal abilities as well. By the time he was 17, having already gained local notoriety with a few smaller projects, he began performing original music at venues around New England with a rock band he was invited to join.

This continued throughout his adult years, performing with a number of musical outfits, including a 30-piece symphonic metal group, a tribute project celebrating the music of Steve Vai and other virtuosic guitarists, and has even had the opportunity to perform with graduates of the Berklee College of Music.

When James is not teaching here at Founders, he can be found enjoying time at home with his fiance and 2 children, or on the stage with his band Leon Trout, whom he still avidly performs with. Though not having what most would consider a formal musical education, he has sourced his musical knowledge base from years of experience in the performing arts, learning from everyone he has met along the way.

Suffice to say, James looks forward to sharing that knowledge and experience with his students.
